The Power to Save a Life Is in Your Hands

Apr 25, 2026

As a neonatologist shared, saving lives isn’t limited to doctors or hospitals — sometimes, it starts with something as simple as registering to be a stem cell donor. For patients with blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma, a stem cell transplant can be their only chance at survival. But finding a match is difficult, especially for Indian-origin patients, where the donor pool in the U.S. is still very limited.

Recognizing this urgent need, HopeLink partnered with the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) to launch nationwide stem cell drives across the U.S. Their goal is simple — increase the number of donors so more patients have a real chance at finding a match. Because the reality today is heartbreaking: Too many patients never find one.

Take Anika’s story - A young mother diagnosed with leukemia, she had exhausted all treatment options. Her only hope was a stem cell transplant — but her chances of finding a match were less than 40%. After months of searching, a donor who had registered years earlier turned out to be her match. That one decision gave her a second chance — to live, to be with her family, and to watch her child grow up.

And here’s the part most people don’t know — stem cell donation today is simple and safe. In most cases, it’s similar to donating blood, and it begins with just a cheek swab to join the registry. You may never get the call, but if you do, you could be the one person who changes someone’s life forever.
